A MyNarcolepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been taking adderal for a good 15 years. The highest does and is not helping. I took adderal originally for adhd. But it doesn’t seem to work anymore. Do you have any suggestions?

I am currently taking Armodafinil/Nuvigil 200 mg. It is working very well for me. I can't say it is perfect but better then anything else I've tried.

Adderall is an amphetamine, and like many drugs, you build up a tolerance for it over time and need larger doses for it to work. When it is no longer working at the maximum allowable dose, you either have to cycle off for a while until it is completely out of your system and your body resets itself, or you can switch to a different drug that also helps your symptoms. It varies with the individual. What works for me is alternating between Adderall and Focalin (dexmethylphenidate), usually on about a 6-month cycle. For the past several months I've been on Focalin ER 20 mg in the morning, with a 10 mg tablet available in the afternoon as a "rescue" or booster if needed. This is a relatively low dosage, and it's not working anymore. At my appointment in two days, I will report that to my sleep doc, and he will probably raise the dosage. At the next appointment in 3 or 4 months, it will probably be time to switch over to Adderall again.

Fatigue - sadly, narcolepsy is one of my fatigue-causing diseases. Ankylosing Spondylitis is another, trigeminal neuralgia/occipital neuralgia are two more ... all of these diseases cause fatigue. Any combination of these causes Extreme Fatigue. My wife says she understands ... Really?

Dexadrine or dextroamphetamine was the only medication I took for many years to treat my eds it wasn't until this year that my insurance became medicaid that they refused coverage for the dextroamphetamine and demanded I switch to the dextroamphetamine/combination which is generic Adderall that I began using this. I am really shocked by the difference in price $35 for the generic Adderall versus $530 for generic Dexadrine. Drug companies just love to do the price gouging they can get away with. Imagine what we'd be paying if 30 million kids weren't taking it for adhd.

@A MyNarcolepsyTeam Member, I don't understand why you would ask for Dexedrine. Dexedrine is a brand name for dextroamphetamine. Adderall is a combination of two types of amphetamines, and one of them is dextroamphetamine. So, when you take Adderall, you are also taking Dexedrine. Taking Dexedrine alone would be taking only one of the active ingredients of Adderall.
