A MyNarcolepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

What do you wish your doctors office better understood about your social situation and it’s impact on ability to get healthcare and follow a medication plan?

What resources do you wish your doctor could offer to help you live a better healthier life?

Ok my wish is simple. I wish the doctors would take the time to really look into the symptoms. Not just shoot at the hip. Understand it's not as simple as a headache hear is some asprin. I guess I want doctor more like house.

I am fortunate to have the doctor I have as I was seeing a previous physician and he wouldn't order the MSLT to determine if I had narcolepsy then when he did I was falling asleep in less than 15 seconds and he wouldn't diagnose narcolepsy. That practice went out of business which led to my finding my current doc. He is on top of current developments in medication and other treatment so it helps me a great deal. Sorry for long post but short answer is if you aren't getting relief and doctor doesn't listen find a dedicated sleep specialist that knows narcolepsy and go to them

My experience is that MOST doctors know nothing about Narcolepsy. If you are frustrated or unhappy with a medical provider, I suggest you schedule interviews with several other doctors to whom you want to count on for medical issues. Be upfront with your diagnosis and ask a potential provider what they know about it; how sincere is their desire to kearn more about; and finally, ask yourself which doctor from the group of all those you selected to interview, did you honestly "cluck" with. Great doctors ARE out there. Give yourself the chance to choose!

Just a suggestion to us all...if you're not satisfied with your current doctor, ask for a second opinion.
