I have experienced varying symptoms since 1990 (my narcolepsy diagnosis). I used to have very vivid dreams and hard to wake up after a nights sleep and i fell asleep very quickly. My original sleep studies, I went into REM immediately and sleep within 3-4 minutes. This year, (my MSLT), it took avg 14 minutes to sleep with one REM period. Daytime sleepiness has varied, but I found myself using caffeine products to level myself.
I was told once you have NARCOLEPSY it does not leave you. Now I am diagnosed with Idiopathic Hypersomnia. I would like to hear other’s experiences.
Thank you!

My current sleep doctor today told me I no longer have narcolepsy today even though all my symptoms have resumed since I saw him last April … after the MLST test he had me undergo this past march was within normal limits. I first underwent a test in December 2016 and initially diagnosed with narcolepsy. I feel very frustrated and still dealing with symptoms…. I plan to see yet another sleep specialist for another opinion.

Thanks so much, Frank. My diagnosis was very similar to yours. My initial MLST test said my brain went to sleep every 3.4 minutes (2017). My MLST test done in March this year said I had 1 had only one episode of REM at 10 minutes. My doctor said I was within the normal limits and didn’t need him anymore. I did research that says it can go into remission, but return at any time. I still have frequent episodes of sleep paralysis and occasional cataplexy. I feel just as sleepy today as I have my entire life. I do know stress of any kind can affect this neurological disorder.
