Members responded to a question about the age they were diagnosed with narcolepsy, and a striking theme was how long most people waited before receiving answers, often decades after symptoms first appeared. Several members shared that they noticed something was wrong in childhood or early adulthood but weren't diagnosed until their 30s, 40s, or even 60s, with many feeling frustrated that doctors dismissed or misidentified their symptoms for years. A recurring theme was the emotional weight of lost time, with members expressing relief at finally having a diagnosis while grieving the years they struggled without proper support or treatment.

I was diagnosed this year at age 39. I know I’ve had it since birth because of all the stories people tell of how I was the perfect child who just put myself down for naps whenever I needed it as an infant, child, teen, etc. I am still a bit angry that the HUNDREDS of times I’ve sought help in the past 39 years, because I was too tired for it to be normal, no one even thought for a second it could be narcolepsy. It was always “eat more protein and workout/weight train”🙄

I was diagnosed when I was 28, I’m now 50. I was experiencing light symptoms way younger than that but it wasn’t till I was about 26 that my symptoms became bad and alarming

I was 22; however, I was VERY lucky and was diagnosed in a matter of 4-5 months.
