Hey natashaEspey,
I resonate with your encounters and experience at work place.
Be thankful you had a mindful ,caring and considerate employer. Where I come from, narcolepsy is unheard of even within the corridors of medicine and hospitals thus misdiagnosis and/or is totally undiagnosed. Needless to say, bridging the narcolepsy information gap in work places may take a century to be realized.

I know where you coming from. I have had Narcolepsy many years. Before I could find a doctor to believe in me. Some people think it’s lazy. Some jobs will say can’t hire you. Because you might get hurt.

I can attest to that. I had a job a few years ago where they made an accommodation towards the narcolepsy as I frequently experience sleep paralysis and it takes so long to even realize that or why I am awake. That accommodation made it to where if the paralysis caused me being late to work I was covered a little over 300 hrs absent time per year. Only thing that saved my job.

How do you manage living with Type 1 narcolepsy and its impact on your daily life?

Living with Type 1 narcolepsy can indeed be challenging. Your experience with less frequent cataplexy episodes triggered by emotions is quite common. Type 1 narcolepsy affects people differently - some may have multiple cataplexy episodes daily while others experience them rarely. The core symptoms you may be experiencing include:
• Excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden sleep attacks
• Sleep paralysis when waking or falling asleep
• Disrupted nighttime sleep
• Hallucinations when falling asleep or waking up
• Cataplexy episodes triggered by strong emotions like stress, anger, or excitement

While narcolepsy is a chronic condition, it's important to remember that its effects can be managed with proper treatment and support. Many people with narcolepsy learn to adapt their lifestyle and develop coping strategies over time.
