i might start to feel a little zoned out…but not really much warning. I have been blessed not to wreck, but I pull over immediately. I have even taken a nap on the side of the interstate. Very dangerous but less dangerous than sleeping while I’m driving. Taken naps in my car in parking lots a lot. But once my episode gets past a certain point I can’t rationalize anything, so I don’t wait to pull over. I don’t know why but eating shelled sunflower seeds will stop me from falling asleep at the wheel. Nasty habit, shells everywhere but it works. Strange bc eating doesn’t always stop me from an episode.

Driving with narcolepsy can be extremely dangerous, especially when sleep attacks come on suddenly. Many people with narcolepsy experience excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden sleep attacks that can make driving hazardous. Some members of MyNarcolepsyTeam have reported having no recollection of parts of their drive or "waking up" after arriving at their destination. Here are some safety strategies to help manage driving with narcolepsy:
• Take prescribed wakefulness-promoting medication before driving
• Plan shorter driving distances
• Schedule regular nap breaks during longer trips
• Avoid driving after heavy meals
• Stay away from sedating medications before/while driving
• Listen to talk radio or podcasts instead of music
• Pull over immediately if you feel sleepiness coming on
If your sleep attacks are coming on too quickly to find an exit, it may be worth discussing your current treatment plan with your healthcare provider to explore better symptom management options.
