I would also put a camera in your living room or near the entrance. You can get cameras for fairly cheap on Amazon and it will record on your phone for proof.

Here’s the part your landlord does not want you to know:

👉 Nebraska law requires landlords to give notice before entering, and a lease cannot force you to waive that right.
The statute requires “reasonable notice,” and 24 hours is standard. A work order does not magically convert into a 3-week open invitation to enter your home.

👉 Entering without notice — especially without an open work order — is illegal.
It violates the Nebraska Uniform Residential Landlord and Tenant Act.

👉 Denying your request for a disability accommodation may be a violation of the Fair Housing Act.
You have a documented disability. You provided a doctor’s note. You requested something reasonable — notice before entry — and they denied it without any real explanation.
HUD takes that extremely seriously.

So just know this: what they’re doing is not only wrong, it may actually be unlawful.

And the beautiful thing is… you have options.

If you ever want to request the accommodation again (and you 100% have the right to), you can put this sentence in writing to them:

“This is a formal request for a reasonable accommodation under the Fair Housing Act due to my disability. Please provide your approval or written explanation of denial within 10 days, per HUD guidelines.”

That one line tells them you know your rights — and it forces them into compliance or into giving a legally defensible reason (which they probably can’t).

You can also file a free complaint with HUD or the Nebraska Equal Opportunity Commission. You don’t need a lawyer. You don’t need money. You just need your story and the dates/times they entered without permission. Retaliation is illegal, too — they can’t punish you for standing up for yourself.

But above everything:
You are not crazy. You are not weak. And you are not wrong.
This situation would overwhelm anyone, let alone someone managing narcolepsy, sleep paralysis, and medications that make nighttime safety delicate.

You deserve to nap without fear.
You deserve to sleep without having to barricade yourself.
You deserve a landlord who respects your home and your body.

I live in Nebraska. And it is illegal to enter without 24 hours notice unless it’s an emergency. But my landlord hides behind their lease agreement that says tenants waive their 24 hours rights away when we create a work order.

The only problem is, work orders can take up to 3 weeks for someone to show up so I’m always preparing every day for them to show up. It’s exhausting. I am too scared to take naps during the day whenever I have an open work order because of sleep paralysis. And they’ve come into my apartment without work orders open too so I gave up and just lock my bedroom door and got the biggest dog I could get, a Great Dane.

I asked for a reasonable accommodation: for 24 hour notice and my express consent before entering. but they denied it even with knowing my diagnosis and providing a doctor’s note back in 2021. My doctors told me to be careful who I tell about my medications and diagnosis but I ended up telling them about the powerful meds I take at night and how waking up to a fire alarm can be challenging. They still denied it.

What state do you live in? That seems highly illegal to me.
