Xyrem (sodium oxybate) is one of the most effective treatments available for narcolepsy. It works by deepening sleep at night, which helps the brain restore its natural sleep cycle β€” making day feel like day and night feel like night again.

Here are the key benefits:

- Reduces excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) β€” better nighttime sleep means more energy and alertness during the day
- Reduces cataplexy attacks β€” some people see attacks stop almost entirely, meaning they can laugh or feel excited without fear of collapsing
- Improves sleep quality β€” more time spent in deep, restorative sleep and fewer nighttime wake-ups
- Long-term effectiveness β€” benefits tend to continue for years with consistent use
- May reduce reliance on naps or caffeine β€” as nighttime sleep improves, daytime coping strategies may become less necessary Xyrem is taken twice nightly β€” once at bedtime and again about three hours later. It works quickly, so it's important to already be in bed before taking it.

A few important safety notes:

- Never mix with alcohol or sedatives β€” this can dangerously slow breathing
- Common early side effects include nausea, dizziness, headache, bed-wetting, and sleepwalking β€” these often fade as the body adjusts
- Doctors typically start with a low dose and increase gradually to find the right balance

It's only available through a special safety program (REMS), so a certified pharmacy will ship it directly to you with guidance on dosing and storage. Always check with your doctor before combining it with any other medication, even over-the-counter cold or allergy remedies.
